Dragon® Medical
Included in the "stimulus package" passed by Congress in February, 2009, is $19.2 billion intended to incentivize the use of Electronic Health Records (EHR). This part of the bill is called the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH). Why is this important? Lawmakers have set aside $17 billion of the allocated funds as incentives for physicians and hospitals that participate in Medicare and Medicaid. Those who do not adopt EHR systems after 2015 will not only be unable to obtain the incentives, but may be subject to penalties. Medicare, for example, will reduce fees 1% per year (up to 3%) by 2017 if a participating physician does not make the switch to an EHR.
